Senior NativeDSD Reviewer Bill Dodd and NativeDSD Technical Advisor Brian Moura have spent the entire year listening to all of the music we added to the store from the almost 70 Labels that are now available at NativeDSD. The many hours of listening and many hours of selecting have now resulted in their 30 Nominations for NativeDSD Albums of the Year 2018.

Bill Dodd selected 20 albums and Brian Moura selected 10 albums, of which 5 albums turn out to be the same! Over the Holiday Season our team members Jared, Jonas, Floor, Tom and Ted will be listening to the nominations and vote. We will publish the Top 3 NativeDSD Albums of the Year 2018 on the 11th of January 2019.

While there are many highlights – and purchases – to be made here by DSD listeners, the DSD 256 Stereo and DSD 256 Multichannel editions of the album The Girl From Bossa Nova by Jacintha is the place to start. Offering cool and engaging vocals, Jacintha’s voice is delivered in the Center Channel speaker in the DSD 256 Surround Sound edition of this album. Arresting and stunning. A must own DSD release.

You may not be familiar with guitarist Enno Voorhorst, but this album will quickly place him on your list of favorites. Concerto Metis is an album that is a tribute to French guitar virtuoso and composer Roland Dyens. Wonderfully recorded and available in Stereo, Multichannel and even Binaural DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64 and DXD, this is one of my favorite albums from 2018.

A refreshing change of pace, the self-titled debut album by Les Chats Noirs takes you to Europe with music from the streets of Paris. It’s quite a musical journey as you listen to several musical styles and genres including Swing, French Chanson, Jazz and even the group’s performance of Video Killed The Radio Star – all in an excellent DSD 256 recording. A true sonic and musical treat.

Dirk Sommer, publisher of Hi Fi Statement Magazine and owner of Sommelier du Son (Steward of Sound) brings us a Live Concert recording of European Blues Legend Hans Theessink. Transferred from Analog Master Tape to Stereo DSD 256 this is a fine example of how a straight forward live recording of a singer and the blues is a perfect fit with DSD 256. An instant must own DSD release.

Another gem from Yarlung Artists as they introduce listeners to organist Jung-A Lee. She offers an enthusiastic and passionate performance from Walt Disney Concert Hall in this live, direct to DSD 256 Stereo and DSD 256 Surround Sound recording. Track 10, Lee’s composition “Fantasia on Blessed Assurance” features some serious rear channel sonics designed to test any DSD Surround Sound system.
