Sergei Prokofiev in the Spotlight Mar 31 by Bill Dodd in Dodd's DSD Discoveries, News

Sergei Prokofiev, April 23, 1891 –  March 5, 1953, today is considered one of the top composers of the 20th Century.  Two of his ballets are among the most performed and most popular. His film scores are lauded Ivan the Terrible, Alexander Nevsky, and Lieutenant Kije (the “Troika” from the Lieutenant Kije Suite has become a Christmas standard around the world).  His  3rd Piano Concerto and 5th Symphony are standard repertoire and loved by audiences everywhere. He left Russia for the US after the revolution, then to Germany, and later to Paris for a few years.  Unlike his compatriots Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky, he finally went back to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. His death was largely ignored as he died the same day as Stalin. Native DSD is fortunate to have some very fine recordings of some of his works.
